Nice take on this one - Cool typography picture!
This is an excellent example of palimpsest in Ghost Signs, where one sign fades allowing the older sign to push through to compete for space. It's a type of Ghost Sign that is quite common as the walls were sold for periods of time (surprisingly in those days it was years rather than weeks) and then painted over when the new sign was booked in.
