Silk-Tie Dyed Easter Eggs: Part 2

These are the results from dying eggs with the technique I saw on Martha Stewart's show. I'm very pleased with them. I found that darker colors work best and also use a square of fabric large enough to cover the whole egg. The picture includes the fabric used on each egg. Thursday Challenge: Round

Merry go round ride at the fair. The horses on these rides are always painted so beautiful, it's always hard for me to choose one. By the time I do, I get stuck with the one that doesn't go up and down.

Silk-Tie Dyed Easter Eggs: Part 1

On Martha Stewart's show today they showed how to die Easter Eggs with silk ties. When the segment came on I thought, "This is going to be way too hard and complicated"—no, it's looks rather easy and with beautiful results. So I went to the thrift store and bought silk ties for $1 a piece (one tie will do about 5 or 6 eggs). Your best best would be to get silk scarves or ties with lots of different colors in the patterns and depending on the way you wrap your egg, they will all be different. I know it's more than "thoughtlessness" that allows historic buildings to become neglected and rundown but I still thought it was a good fit for the theme. There's something about historic buildings, no matter how dishevelled they are that attracts me to them.

Illustration Friday: Speed

For Illustration Friday's "Speed" challenge I thought of a lot of things, races, cars, sports, etc. I also thought of it from a different view as "speed" as a drug. Then I thought what is the fastest thing I could think of? It would have to be email. The distance that email can travel in a few seconds still amazes me. I included my sketch also to show what I edited out in the final Illustrator rendering.

Dogwood Blossoms Mark Spring

One of the definite signs of spring is the dogwood tree in my yard. It begs to have its picture taken each year. The blossoms up against a bright blue sky are so dramatic.

Sour Patch Kids Commercials

So I'm watching some mindless reality tv on MTV and I see these two "Sour Patch Kids Candy" commercials. They are too funny. Very inventive. Studio Friday: Room With a View

Here's my view out the door of my studio. Not too inspiring, I know, but it's nice to have some natural light when I want it. My main "view" consists of the view into my computer screen since that's where I do most of my work. It's nice to know that if I need a break, fresh air is just a couple of steps out the door.

Jim Krause Design Books

Just received my two new Jim Krause design books from Amazon today: "Creative Sparks" and "Photo Idea Index". I had to get "Idea Index" and the "Layout Index" for a design classes in school and have loved every book since. They are great little books with vinyl covers that you can flip through for great inspiration and ideas. They are great to use when doing thumbnail sketches or for a brainstorming session. For this monday's theme, my photo is a closeup view through security glass to the outside. I like the diagonal lines with the background out-of-focus and "unknown".

Studio Friday: Secret Stash

I've been keeping up with "Studio Friday" each week and I've finally decided to participate. Each week in "Studio Friday" a different theme is established to highlight a portion of the studio or work in progress. My "Secret Stash" are these fruit/veggie people salt/pepper shakers that I collect. I'm pretty particular, though :-). They have to have "made in japan" on the bottom. They also have to be fruits or vegetables with human attributes—even though I do have a pair of raindrops with faces and a spoon and fork with human features. I love these because they are very colorful and so ugly they're cute.

Springtime

In the "Nature" mode from my previous post, I'm posting a picture of some forsythia bushes that have just started blooming. I almost miss them each year because they're in the very back of my yard and usually it's too cold for me to get back there. Today was nice and warm so they got to be my subject of study.

Thursday Challenge: Nature

This was one of the first pictures I took with my new Canon Digital Rebel; it was also the only time I've ever seen a cicada coming out of it's shell—which was very cool. When I was little I use to love looking for the shells and making them cling to your shirt. I was pretty old before I ever actually saw an adult cicada. Another thing that's neat about these bugs is the amazing sounds they make in the summer, a regular bug choir.

Rain, Rain, Go Away...

Interested in the raindrops formation on my window, I had to take a picture. I like the composition of the raindrops in the foreground with a the background all running together. I rather like rainy days.
